Prom Photographers

The Prom Night photograph is fast becoming as iconic as the Graduation Day shot. Parents love to have them as it is a rare opportunity to capture daughters and in particular sons in finery they never normally wear, as well as being an important record of a very special coming of age event.

Therefore, a good photographer for the night is a must. There are photographers who specialise in this type of work and they can easily be found on a Google search. Their websites should show previous work and you can decide if you like their style. They do get very busy around late Spring/Summer so early booking is recommended. One thing which is important to consider is how many students you will have attending and how many photographs can realistically be taken that night. Read more…

Choosing a Prom Venue

Choosing a venue for Prom Night is the single biggest decision the Prom Committee has to make. However, it needn’t be difficult. First up, does the school have a venue they have used in the past and would be happy to use again? If this is the case then go directly to that venue to check availability and obtain a price quote. All being well you have a booking.

Finding a venue from scratch requires leg work. By all means surf the net to find local venues but there’s no substitute for a personal visit to your favourites. The look and feel of the place and the attitude of the staff towards you will speak volumes about how you are likely to be treated on the night. If they seem chaotic and disorganised during your visit or very strict and stuffy then it doesn’t bode well for the evening itself. Read more…

Bella Swan’s Wedding Shoes

They are truly beautiful – and very high! Bella’s wedding dress in the latest Twilight movie ‘Breaking Dawn’ was stunning but her shoes were the stuff of dreams. Designed by Manolo Blahnik and aptly named ‘Swan’ they are now available to buy from Neiman Marcus for a mere $1,295. The satin pump has crystal beading, a 4.1/4 covered heel and is also available in black and cranberry.

Getting There

‘Arriving’ is a big part of prom night. Turning up in anything from the traditional stretch limousine to a double decker London bus, black cab, flashy sports car, tank or helicopter is all part of the fun. It doesn’t have to cost the earth either. If you get together with a group of friends and all leave from the one address you can share the hire charge making even high cost options affordable. It’s a great photo opportunity too!

If money is tight, ask around and see if any family or friends have a vehicle which would be fun to arrive in – a super sleek Merc; unique old Austin Healy; a VW van which could be decorated for the night or even a parent’s work vehicle which would do the job.

Finally, this one is weather dependent, but worth considering for the guys – a bicycle or tandem. Best to have someone drive you to the venue and then cycle down the drive as you don’t want to arrive at prom all hot and sweaty.

It’s Tuxedo Time

It’s not often you get a chance to really dress up. Now you may be looking forward to it or it may be your worst nightmare but, like it or not, girls love a man in a Tux.

So, what’s a Tux? Essentially ‘Black Tie’ events like a Prom Night require those attending to wear a tuxedo or dinner suit. This includes black trousers (often with a black satin strip down the outside leg) and a black jacket with black satin lapels. The cut of the jacket can have different styles and number of buttons. The trousers don’t usually have belt loops but are flat at the front so you can wear a satin cummerbund instead of a belt.

Dress shirts are often worn with a tux. They tend to be white and have a decorative panel down the front. Some have wing collars, some don’t. Most have double cuffs so require cuff links. Bow ties are always worn with a dress shirt and can be any colour except white (James Bond favours black). Bow ties come ready tied with elastic fittings or as a tie which you need to do up yourself – harder than it sounds. Waistcoats are optional.

Tuxedos can be bought or hired. If you do hire your outfit book well in advance as the prom night period is a busy one. Make sure they measure you for any adjustments which need to be made, length of trousers for example. Be certain what’s included in your hire cost ie: suit, shirt, bow tie, cummerbund etc as often it is just the jacket and trousers. Arrange to collect the suit at least the day before if not earlier so you can try it on at home and make sure you return it on time or there will be additional costs.

Prom Night is a special occasion and worth looking good for, however, you needn’t go the Tux route. If you have a smart suit and a nice shirt and would prefer to wear that then check with the Prom organisers if this will be suitable and if so that’s great. Anyone with Scottish blood might like to consider wearing a kilt – which just begs the question ‘What do you wear under it?’
