With prom season approaching, gown designers want your attention and so create genuinely fabulous competitions offering you the chance to win your dress and many more prom essentials besides.

We’ve trawled the net for you and present our round up of the best online comps. Not all countries can enter all comps so check conditions before entering. Be lucky!

Kate Fearnley – Designs with a Difference

Young, talented and successful, British designer Kate Fearnley creates clothes that stand out from the crowd, like this stunning black and white taffeta gown.

Edgy, unusual prom frocks and special occasion dresses fill her boutique in Middlesbrough and her quirky style enjoys a celebrity following including, Pixie Lott, Zoe Salmon and Alexandra Burke.

Her collection for 2012 has a 1950′s feel … with a Fearnley twist. We found the ‘Darcy’ gown (above) in the ‘Bridesmaid’ section of her website, priced at £199, but think it would make an ideal prom choice. While over in the Prom section the newly listed ‘Florence’ dress (right) is priced at £225 and gorgeous in ivory with cut out detail and a bow at the back.

Winner of Cosmopolitan magazine’s ‘Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year’ Kate’s gowns are now available in over 80 stockists nationwide, from her boutique in the North of England or online at www.katefearnleyboutique.co.uk. Oh, and there’s a sale on at the moment too!!

Red Carpet 1920′s Style

The awards season has just begun but already we’ve had some truly gorgeous frocks on the red carpet. Perhaps as a result of the new multi-Oscar nominated silent movie ‘The Artist’, set in the 1920′s, the flapper look is emerging as a trend.

Last night’s National Television Awards saw Fearne Cotton (left) wearing a stunning gown by Temperley London. The beautiful silk, crystal and tasseled dress ended just on Fearne’s knee but still had a distinct 1920′s feel.

Glee’s Lea Michele (right) graced the People’s Choice Awards earlier in the month in a fringe dress from the Marchesa Spring 2012 collection yet reminiscent of the Jazz Era.

With this modern take on the flapper style both ladies looked amazing and funnily enough both were declared ‘best dressed’ on the night by various journals.

Many prom designers are incorporating fringing and flapper elements into their gowns for 2012 but if you want the real thing check out Hollywood-based Leluxe Clothing. They’ve faithfully re-created 1920′s gowns for years and their Tango cream and silver dress is to die for.

More accessible is the highly individual Frock and Frill brand (left) who have a beaded Charleston style dress priced at £55 in nude.

Tuxedo Tees – Here To Party!

You better believe it – girls love a man in a traditional tux! However, if it just isn’t you then why not mix it up a bit. For example a black suit … with a tuxedo tee shirt? Somewhat dependent on the dictates of your particular prom but, if rules allow, then you’ll certainly stand out from the crowd.

The classic tuxedo tee is so popular in the States that Todd Walbridge runs a website selling nothing else. He’s been decorating tees for 20 years and says not all tuxedo tees are created equal. He prints onto pre shrunk heavy duty cotton – no transfers allowed – and has an extraordinary range including some with real bow ties! His best selling black tux tee (pictured) costs $11.85 from www.tuxedo-tshirts-online.com.

Not usually available on the British high street, a selection of tux tees can be found online at Amazon from around £10.

Mum might be heartbroken you’re not in full penguin mode on prom night but to paraphrase the movie Talladega Nights “A tuxedo t-shirt says I want to be formal, but I’m here to party.”

Evening Bag Opposites

While checking out the latest lines in Coast this week, I noticed two evening bags on opposite shelves. They were totally different but each was perfect in its own way.

Like a little party dress you carry, the black Ruffle Bag is all flounces and satin ribbons. Extremely feminine and pretty it would work well with a very simple frock.

By total contrast the Pisa Clutch in Lipstick red is a bag of sleek, structured simplicity. With a faceted gem clip fastening and optional chain shoulder strap, it would ideally partner many dresses, both simple and bold.

The Ruffle Bag is £35 and the Pisa Clutch £45 both available in store or from Coast-stores.com

New Prom Dress Emporium Opens

Ladies of the Midlands, you are indeed blest. Last weekend a new shop opened in Culcheth, Warrington, stocking a huge range of evening and special occasion wear and, yes, masses of designer prom gowns.

The Dress Studio carries frocks by Alyce Prom, Faviana, Joli Prom, Jovani, Night Moves by Allure, Tony Bowls Paris and Mac Duggal (pictured left) to name but a few and describes itself as ‘the one stop shop for the perfect dress’.

Already running one of the largest online prom dress shops in the UK and with years of experience in the pageant and beauty competition world (Miss Teen Great Britain officially opened the shop), The Dress Studio believe they know what a girl wants in a prom dress.

Currently stocking approximately 700 gowns, their collection is being added to all the time as they source new brands from around the world – just today they became the first UK stockist of Australian designer Dana Mathers.

Prices start at £29 and they are confident they can find you something “that makes you feel like a princess” on prom night.

Situated 5 minutes from the M62 and M6, the Dress Studio is open Tuesday to Saturday, or you can visit online at www.dress-studio.co.uk.

Miss Piggy for MAC Eye Collection

That ultimate icon of style and glamour, Miss Piggy, makes a glorious return to the silver screen next month in Disney’s The Muppets.

To coincide with the film launch, the superstar has collaborated with MAC Cosmetics to pass on some of her unique beauty know how via a limited-edition, online-exclusive eye collection of just three perfect little pieces.

The Miss Piggy Pink eye shadow at £11.50, the Penultimate Eye Liner in Rapidblack at £14 and, naturellement, dramatic false eyelashes, 36 Lash at £10.

The collection is available exclusively from www.maccosmetics.co.uk in February.

The Muppets movie hits cinemas from 10th February 2012.

Chinese Year of the Dragon

Kung Hey Fat Choi! The Chinese Year of the Dragon has arrived and to celebrate we’re featuring an oriental dress.

Perfect for special evenings and an unusual option for prom night this fully lined, silk brocade dress is in the Chinese lucky colour of red with gold ‘Blessings’ pattern … all considered very auspicious. Detailed with frog buttons and side splits, it can be made to measure, to fit your curves and flatter your shape.

Delightfully named the ‘Forever Fortune’ dress, it will add a touch of Eastern promise to your prom night. Available from www.chinesedresses.co.uk prices start at £65.

Kate Moss Lipstick Collection

In honour of Kate Moss’s 10 years as the face of Rimmel London, she’s created her first ever lipstick collection.

Lasting Finish Lipstick comes in seven easy to wear shades from bright reds to soft pinks and nude. Offering all day colour, the lipsticks have added black diamond pigment complex, meaning they reflect more deeply, resulting in more radiant tones.

Each lipstick is housed in a chic matte black bullet, indicative of Kate Moss’s rocker style and bears the supermodel’s signature in bold red for elegance with an edge. Priced at £5.49 they are available from Boots.com.
