Missguided Lilac Prom Dress

Missguided 'Harriet' Lilac Maxi

Featuring dresses which aren’t easily available is pointless BUT in the case of this beautiful dress by Missguided we’re making an exception … and with good reason. Visit the Missguided website and chances are you’ll find this lilac dress, style name Harriet, is available in only one size, or two, or none. However, visit again in an hour and the available sizes will have changed – we’ve been doing it repeatedly over recent days and the available sizes change constantly. Now getting a stunning chiffon-style prom dress, for just £38.99, has got to be worth a few website visits. Don’t you agree?

PS  It comes in other colours.

Rent The Designer Prom Dress Of Your Dreams

Dina Bar-El red ball gown

Girl Meets Dress

Want to knock ‘em dead on prom night in a stunning designer gown? Well, the latest online dress hire sites have designer gowns aplenty and you can rent the frock of your dreams for a fraction of its red carpet price tag.

Girl Meets Dress

Goes without saying you won’t have a dress hanging in the wardrobe after prom but ask yourself how often you’d have the chance to wear it again anyway?

The two giants in UK online rental are Girl Meets Dress and Wish Want Wear. They stock different designers so it’s worth looking at both. Girl Meets Dress carry gowns from over a hundred designers so there’s plenty of choice and their range of figure hugging gowns by Dina Bar-El are stunning. Wish Want Wear stock about 40 designers but do have several gowns by popular prom designer Jovani. Check out the FAQ’s on both sites before deciding if renting’s right for you.

Girl Meets Dress

Girl Meets Dress Dina Bar-El red satin gown, style name Gemma, (above) costs £109 to hire but retails at £700. The Girl Meets Dress Dina Bar-El black lace gown with flared fish tail, style name Louise, (right) costs £109 to hire and retails at £700. Girl Meets Dress Ruth Tarvydas gold gown (left), style name Hidden Gem, costs £69 to rent and retails
at £640.

Wish Want Wear

Wish Want Wear black Jovani dress with silver detail costs £65 to rent and retails at £405. Did you love the dress Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, wore to the War Horse premier? Hers was by Temperley London and Wish Want Wear have one similar to hire for £265. Pricey but then it does retail at £1995!

Rare Fashion Bargains

It’s true, there are some very good sales at the moment, but I want to mention one bargain-fest in particular.

Rare, who you may know from their Top Shop concession, have a range called Opulence, specialising in rather fab dresses. They tend to be luxurious, with lots of detailing, and are a little more expensive than their other collections. Well, Rare currently have a sale on and Opulence frocks are in it.

Our pictured dress, the Opulence Bustle in mauve, was £155 but is now £35. With dresses, previously featured in top magazines, at less than half price, you know you’re onto a good thing. There’s an extra 10% off the sale this weekend with code EXTRA10 and free standard UK delivery.

My advice, it’s Friday, stop what you’re doing right now and have a look.

Designer Frocks to Rock and Return

Love to wear a genuine designer frock to prom but funds won’t stretch? Well there is a way … renting! Renting is the new buying. Gone are the days of dusty old hire shops with nothing but granny dresses, today’s renting is online and celebrity led.

Enjoying huge attention from the press at the moment is www.girlmeetsdress.com and we can see why. They carry over 100 designers, prices start at £29 for 2 nights rental and they stock sizes 6-16. Now, not every dress is available in every size and to be honest we couldn’t see much available at £29, but there are masses of gorgeous frocks at £49 and stunning prom gowns under £100. Delivery is £9.99 (for up to 3 frocks) including pre-paid return, they take care of the dry cleaning and you can pre-order your gown months in advance.

Girl Meets Dress have a good choice of ‘As Seen On’ celebrity dresses including this Orange Sand dress(right) in silk crepe by Krystof Strozyna as worn by Cheryl Cole – retails at £900, rent for £49. Read the FAQ section of their website before deciding if it’s for you.

Girl Meets Dress do it really well but there are other players in the UK online rental market including www.mycelebritydress.com, www.wishwantwear.com, www.celebritydresshire.co.uk and the wonderfully named Australian www.caniborrowthat.com

In store dress hire has improved too with Kingston based www.havingaballdresshire.co.uk and www.froxylady.com of Hemel Hempstead carrying excellent ranges of prom gowns to rent.

Vintage Fashion Finds

Some people are brilliant at finding bargains in charity shops – I’m not one of them! However, I was rather pleased to discover that Oxfam now offer an on-line store where you can browse through a range of their latest vintage fashion donations from the comfort of your own sofa and, guess what, while browsing through I found a genuine bargain. This lovely little dress is perfect for prom and is apparently a designer frock by Stella – who I think must be Stella McCartney. So, pretty designer gown for £17.99, not bad.

Oxfam have always been quite innovative. Back in 2008 they launched their first Oxfam Fashion Boutique in London’s Westbourne Grove selling donated high end pieces, often with designer fashion labels. Today there are 9 of these stores across the country and they not only sell the pre-owned clothes but also re-crafted items and a range of new sustainable fashion.

You can follow them on Twitter for all the very latest updates: @OxfamOnlineShop and @OxfamFashion

It’s always worth checking out your local charity shops especially if you’re nifty with a needle and have an eye for how you can alter or accessorise cast offs into fashion finds.

Prom Hunting the January Sales

The January sales are the perfect time to search for all things prom as Christmas party clothes, shoes and jewellery are all highly suitable for prom night wear. High street stores traditionally slash the prices of their party wear in January to clear the racks for their Spring 2012 merchandise which gives you the chance to pick up a prom night bargain. Tiny sparkly dresses look as good in summer as they do in December and party shoes are, well, party shoes whatever the month.

There are however two ways of hunting the sales for prom. Firstly, you can go cheap as chips and pick up a high street frock for under £20 like this classic little black bodycon dress from Miss Selfridge which was £39 but is now just £18. Securing your frock for a song in this way allows you to turn your attention to accessories and make the look your own and the great thing about the timeless LBD is that it looks good on virtually everyone – especially with the support of bodycon to streamline your figure.

Or, secondly, you can scour the web for the prom dress of your dreams at a fraction of its normal price like this satin and tulle beaded ball gown from Prom Royalty originally priced at £355 but now reduced to £235. With a built-in corset and bra it ensures a flattering fit and it comes with a matching wrap. Yes, it’s a lot of money, but it’s a lot less than it was and will require minimum accessorising. The choice, as they say, is yours. Happy hunting!
