The Prom Tux – 150 Years Old!

Kermit

When you don your prom night tux, not only will you look hot, but you’ll be sharing a slice of history that’s now 150 years old.

In 1861 British tailor Henry Poole designed a jacket for the Prince of Wales to wear at informal dinner parties. The jacket had no ‘tails’ and was based on the style of a smoking jacket with satin lapels. Thus began the dinner jacket. It’s unclear how it reached the USA but legend has it that New York millionaire James Potter returned home from a visit to the Prince of Wales in 1886 with a copy of the jacket and started wearing it to his elite Tuxedo Park Club. Other club members adopted the style and so the ‘tuxedo’ was born.

James Bond made it desirable in the 60′s and it’s been gracing red carpets ever since in one form or another. Burton are celebrating the birth of the tux with a suit for just £69 – not bad. Here’s how to wear it.

Rollasole – The Ultimate Prom Accessory

No matter how much you love your sky high heels, hours of partying at prom will have your feet screaming for mercy. Luckily mercy, in the form of roll-up flatties, can be quietly waiting in your handbag for the moment when your feet yell “enough!”

Back in 2008, Matt Horan got fed up giving his high-heel-loving girlfriend a ‘piggy back’ home after every night out. He developed Rollasole, a unique roll-up flat shoe, as a solution to this problem and it’s been providing instant relief to party feet (including the tootsies of stars at the Golden Globes) ever since.

The original Gold Digger Rollasole now comes in a range of colours to match your frock and every pair comes with a little bag for bringing home your shoes.

So, when packing your prom night essentials, give your feet a break and throw in some Rollasoles. Available online from Sock Shop at £6.95.

Pastel Hair at the 2012 Grammys

The red carpet at last night’s Grammy awards was walked by a slightly racier set than the BAFTA’s red carpet. Not only were the dresses more unusual but the hair too. In particular pastel shades were in evidence, worn beautifully by both Katy Perry (left) and (right) Kelly Osbourne.

Although primarily an option for blondes, pastel hair is big for 2012 and there are a number of ways of working it. Directions do a range of unusual shades including pastels. The colour pots cost £3.95 each and the website gives basic instructions on colouring. Dyeing only the ends of your hair, known as dipping, looks cute.

Clip in coloured extensions are less of a commitment than dyeing and can be used regardless of natural colour. Priced at around £23 we found LaClips had a good range of coloured clip ins including blue, pink and purple. Or you could buy blonde extensions and colour them a pastel shade.

Coloured hair mascara is a quick and easy option. It’s almost like painting your hair so does dry quite hard but does wash out. Stargazer do a good range priced at £3.00.

BAFTA’s Red Carpet

The stars came out last night at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden for the BAFTA awards ceremony. Gold was definitely trending in all its glittering shades (see our Facebook coverage) and the little black dress put in a strong appearance too.

To us though the best dress of the night must go to Melissa George (left) in a Victoria Beckham gown which looked as though it was painted on. Her fringed clutch bag was equally gorgeous.

Finding this look for prom 2012 is not easy. The closest we tracked down was from the SuperTrash A/W 2012 collection. This Dutch label (right) are available in House of Fraser and plan to open a flagship store in London this autumn … bit late for prom!

Let’s Get It Started

DJ GramaphoneProm night is your last chance to party with ALL your school mates. If you fancy booking something more inspiring than Dave’s Mobile Disco here’s some ideas.

Currently holding court at some of the hottest clubs and parties across the UK is DJ Grammafone. At 69 she’s a granny DJ phenomenon. Dressed in leathers and shades she can apparently rock a dubstep-heavy set as easily as a party soundtrack. By all accounts it’s not a gimmick, the lady has talent. Does she do proms? “Grammafone will play anywhere there’s people who want to hear her.” So that’s a yes then.

Fancy getting up on stage yourself? Not for the whole night obviously but just one song. Live Karaoke Bands, also known as Bandeoke or Rockaoke, are an extension of the ever popular Karaoke. The live band provide lyrics and a supportive welcome on stage for anyone who fancies singing along. Song sheets are distributed by the band on arrival and they help the singers to give a good performance. LMM supply Rockaoke bands and say they can accommodate most budgets. They can also provide X Factor and Pop Idol finalists as hosts for Rockaoke nights. Pupils, teachers, hmmm … could make for some very memorable moments.

The Beatles, Abba, Rockabilly, Glam Rock, you name it there’s a tribute band out there. So why not enliven your prom theme with a matching tribute band. The Bath Blues Brothers are a South West based tribute to the classic Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi film. They dress in Blues Brothers ‘uniform’ and say that people literally cannot keep still to floor fillers like ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’, ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and  ‘Johnny B. Goode’ (as played at prom by Michael J Fox in the movie Back to the Future). “We like a bit of audience participation too – ‘Minnie the Moocher’ is always a good time to take the mic around the room.”

All That Glitters

Catch the limelight on prom night in one of 2012′s hottest themes – sparkle! Whether you keep sequins to a scattering or opt for an entire glittering gown, if your dress has bling its right on trend.

Ultimate Guide to Prom Transport

Arriving in style on prom night is all part of the fun and it needn’t cost the earth. Below is our guide to making an entrance – from totally free to wildly expensive and everything in between.

Walking Bus (group holding onto rope). Piggy Backs. Roller skates. Pogo sticks. Space hoppers. Kid sister’s Barbie bicycle.

Don’t be shy – rack your brains, think who has an interesting vehicle and persuade them to take you in it.

Metal shopping trolley. Wheel barrow. Sit-upon Lawnmower. Golf cart. Seafront Road Train. Army Truck. Scaffolding Lorry. Tractor. Digger. Ice cream van. Milk Float. Police Car. Hospital Bed on Wheels. Box Trailer. Flash car. Vintage car. VW Camper Van. Sedan Chair. Horse.

Pedal power is fun but not if you have far to go … or care about your hairdoo!!

Bicycle. Tandem. Tricycle.

There are vehicles one associates with prom. They can carry lots of friends, make the journey fun and are relatively easy to hire nationwide.

Stretch Limo. Hummer. NYC Yellow Taxi Limo. Traditional Black London Taxi. Big Red London Bus. Vintage Bus. Fire Engine. Ambulance. Horse and Carraige. Motor Trike.

Fleet of Minis. Fleet of Mopeds – practice formation driving beforehand.

Now we’re getting into more unusual choices. Slightly harder to find on the net so we’ve given some links but there are other companies out there so check yourself for local services.

Tuk Tuk. Dell Boy 3 Wheeler. Classic cars – Fire up the Quattro. A Team Van. Scooby Doo Mystery Machine. Simpsons Bus. American Yellow School BusBarbie Doll Boxes. Cinderella Carriage.

Crazy money … but just so you know.

Tank. Tank Limo. Helicopter.

If you decide to hire make sure the vehicle is licensed to carry passengers and fully insured. Know exactly how many people the vehicle can carry. Check wet weather contingency plans if appropriate. Book your vehicle to arrive at your collection point with enough time for a thousand photos – you’ll want them. Finally, prom season is a very busy time so book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
