Entertainment in the form of a disco or band is usual on Prom Night. As with Venue and Catering, a recommendation would be best – you need a DJ who has the music your students want to dance to. Ask the students if they know of a good DJ, ask other schools who they have used or, if you have to resort to the Yellow Pages, choose someone who can provide you with good Prom Night testimonials. Most DJ’s will be able to provide their own equipment and a range of music but it might be worth asking the students if there are any particular songs they would want to have included. Sometimes Year Groups do have ‘their song’ and it would be a shame if the DJ could not provide it on the night.
All the above points apply to hiring a band for the night. The band option is only really a good idea if you know the band and truly believe the students will enjoy having them play on Prom Night. A popular band from the school is an obvious option but be aware that non-professional players don’t always have access to all the equipment they need if playing out of the school environment. If playing at a hotel venue noise levels will need to be approved by the hotel and space can sometimes be an issue for a band with a full drum kit.
Things to ask your DJ or Band:
- Availablity
- Cost
- Hidden costs i.e. extra equipment hire – lighting, etc.
- How long will they play for and how many breaks they will take
- When they will arrive and how long set up takes
- How much space they need
- If they are familiar with the venue
- If they can provide ‘particular’ songs
Always confirm your booking in writing and telephone at least a week before Prom Night to double-confirm.
